Authentic Japanese Binchotan charcoal (1 to 2 litres)

Discover the authentic Japanese zero waste charcoal

In the south of Japan there is a tree with wood so dense that it is impossible for it to float. It is the Ubamegashi, a typical oak tree of the land of the rising sun. Since the 17th century, its fine branches have been burned to obtain pieces of activated charcoal. They are mainly used to purify drinking water.

Chamarrel, specialist in zero waste products, offers you to discover these Japanese charcoal sticks as an alternative to plastic water bottles. Discover our Binchotan sticks specifically designed for containers between 1 and 2 litres.

Why choose Binchotan charcoal?

It's an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to avoid plastic bottled water. It is also an excellent and affordable way to have filtered drinking water at home or for every outing.

Binchotan carbon has been used for many years in Japan. It is a natural water filtering process that is completely safe for the body. The resulting water is ideal for everyone, even for preparing baby's bottles.

How do you filter water with Binchotan carbon?

It is simple to use: wash your hands, then brush the stick under cold water. Next, pour boiling water on it until it is completely immersed then wait for 12 to 15 minutes to activate it. Take it out and leave it to air dry. Ideally leave it exposed to sun's rays, depending on the season, leaving it in the open air is fine too.

Once it is dry, it is ready to use. Fill up a jug or a glass bottle and add the Binchotan to it. Leave it for at least 8 hours before drinking the water. We like doing it over night and repeat during the day so to have purified water to drink al day long.

The way it works is simple: the Binchotan stick is charged with positive ions, so it can in effect attract and trap in its alveoli the negative ions present in the water. The water will then be purer and more pleasant to drink. Binchotan charcoal filters heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arseni, limescale and chlorine, as well as various residues from pesticide, medicines or sulphur.

Do's and don'ts

Do not leave the charcoal in the same water for more than 48 hours and never use it to filter non-drinking water.

Japanese charcoal can be used on a daily basis. If for any reason you wish to stop using it for a period of time, let the stick dry and store it in an airtight container. It will be ready for the next use.

Your questions about the Binchotan

Can I use my charcoal stick in any container?
The Japanese charcoal pieces we sell are generally up to 3.5 cm in diameter. They can fit in a 1L or 1.5L flask, glss bottle or jug. Be mindful, the sticks may not fit through the neck of some glass bottles because of their diameter and sometimes irregular shape.

How big are the activated charcoal sticks?
At Chamarrrel, our range varies from 15 to 20 cm length. The diameter is roughly 3.5 cm. These are natural and untreated products, so each stick is unique in shape and can therefore vary significantly from one order to the next. We fully accept this, and hope you will too.

Is it a real natural and eco-friendly water filter?
Most
water filters, if not all, contain activated charcoal, often powdered charcoal. We sell it in its natural form, as a stick.

Studies conducted on water purified by Binchotan charcoal have had the following results :

  • Not all the limestone is removed from the water, which is a good thing as it provides calcium to the body
  • The magnesium content remains unchanged
  • The potassium content increases, which is good for deficiencies
  • The hardness of the water is reduced, which makes it less "heavy" to drink
  • The water becomes a little more alkaline, which counteracts the acidic tendency of today's organisms
  • Chlorine is eliminated
  • The level of copper increases, which promotes the formation of red blood cells and boosts the immune system
  • The water is enriched with zinc, which contributes to the correct condition of the skin and hair
  • Heavy metals, such as lead and aluminium are considerably reduced

In conclusion, in general, Binchotan charcoal is a great natural filter.

BINCHOTAN ACTIVE CHARCOAL

Original Japanese product:

Our Binchotan charcoal comes directly from Japan, from the prefecture of Wakayama, the birthplace of Binchotan.

It is made using the ancient method, in a traditional handmade kiln, with branches of Japanese Ubamegashi (holm oak) whose high density is essential for the quality of traditional Binchotan.

Controlled product:

Our Japanese craftsman is renowned for his expertise. He also has the authorizations to export his binchotan. These authorizations are provided by the Wakayama prefecture and are materialized by the yellow sticker which seals each shipment. This ensures the origin and reliability of the binchotan.

Once the Binchotan has arrived in France, at our request, it is tested by the CRIIRAD, a French association approved under the law of 1901 for the protection of the environment, which conducts studies and analyses in the field of radioactivity. These tests are renewed regularly.

Active support for the craft industry:

We have taken the decision to support handicraft production all the way to Japan.

Our activity supports a family that perpetuates the ancestral know-how that is the manufacture of the real Japanese Binchotan.

This is why Binchotan sticks are not regular but we assume this originality.

Product range:

We offer binchotan in sizes S, M and L (like the clothes) or in bulk by 100g (more economical but not "calibrated").

The "calibrated" sticks are all less than 3.5 cm (or even 3 cm) in diameter and are divided according to their weight (20% tolerance):

 - Flask 0.5 - 1 L: 20 g

 - Carafe 1 L: 25 g

 - Jug 1 - 2 L: 35 g

 - Fountain 2 - 3 L: 50 g

 - Carafe 3 - 5 L: 90 g

Use :

The dosage should be adapted to the quality of your water and your palate.

The Carafe stick is sufficient for a 1 litre carafe. Depending on the quality of your water, it may be necessary to switch to a Pitcher stick or even to add 2 Gourd sticks.

This stick are to be used only with drinking water.

It should be handled with clean hands.

1) Put the stick under water and scrub it with a brush or loofah.

2) Plunge it into boiling water for about ten minutes

3) Take it out and let it dry in the open air

4) Once it is dry, place it in your carafe/bottle/flask (ideally in glass or stainless steel) and fill it with DRINKING water

5) Wait (ideally 8 hours or overnight).

6) Your water is ready to be enjoyed.

Precautions :

- Always handle the Binchotan with clean hands.

- Do not leave the Binchotan in the same water for more than 48 hours.

- If it is not used continuously, be sure to let it dry and then store it in an airtight container. It should then be brushed, sterilised (10 minutes in boiling water) and left to dry before being used again.

- Brush, sterilise (10 minutes in boiling water) and dry the Binchotan at least once a month (our craftsman recommends weekly).

Depending on how often you use it, the Binchotan is effective for +/- 4 months with average continuous use.

After that it can be crushed and used in the soil to enrich it, dried and used as an odour absorber (air, refrigerator) for example.
