Genuine Binchotan active charcoal - 1 L capacity

Discover Binchotan charcoal
Binchotan charcoal is a Japanese product, made since the Edo era in the 17th century. It is made from the branches of Ubamegashi, a typical Japanese holm oak with a wood so dense that it does not float.

The Binchotan used for water purification requires a very special carbonisation process. In the end, the carbon content of Wakayama Binchotan is 96%. It is considered to be the purest in the world and is now part of the cultural heritage of the land of the rising sun.

These pieces of charcoal are said to remove the taste and smell of tap water, while purifying it. It is therefore a zero waste alternative to plastic bottles.

Special features of Wakayama Binchotan charcoal
Chamarrel offers you natural Binchotan charcoal sticks from Wakayama. More powerful than recomposed charcoal cartridges, they capture and retain unwanted molecules from tap water. That's why it seems so light and more palatable.

Binchotan sticks are positively charged. They attract negative ions that get trapped in the multiple pores of the charcoal. This way, they "suck out" chlorine, limescale, heavy metals, pesticide, sulphur and drug residues, without releasing them into the water. They are also recommended for purifying baby bottle water to avoid plastic bottles.

How to purify tap water with Binchotan charcoal?
Run the piece of charcoal under water to activate it. Then let it boil in a pot full of water for at least 15 minutes. This will sterilise it. Leave it to dry in the open air and only when it is completely dry can you put it in your one-litre container (bottle, carafe, flask, etc.) filled with tap water.

The litre of water is only purified after about 8 hours. You can therefore use it 3 times a day. The water can be stored in a cool place or at room temperature.

Binchotan charcoal will break the chemical bonds around the molecules it absorbs. It is therefore recommended to boil it once a month to "clean" it, or even weekly if you are using the water for babies or frail people.

The Binchotan charcoal stick can be reused for a period of 6 months. After that, it is considered saturated and should not be used again. You can leave it in your fridge: it will capture bad smells, or throw it in the compost.

Precautions for use
It is not recommended to leave the charcoal in the same water for more than 48 hours. It cannot be used to purify non-drinking water either.

If you do not use your charcoal stick for some time, let it dry and store it away from moisture. The original pouch is perfect for storing it, if you no longer have it, use a glass jar.

Frequently asked questions

My charcoal stick has broken, what should I do?
You can continue to use it in the same way. This has no effect. However, make sure that you always put both pieces in your 1 litre container. If you are undergoing medical treatment, rinse the charcoal pieces and re-boil them before further use. This will prevent lumps of charcoal from being present in the water.

There are charcoal particles in the water, is this worrying?
Not at all! They can be ingested without any danger to your health or that of your family. However, if you are under medical treatment, ask your doctor's advice, as charcoal can reduce the assimilation of medication.

I am going on holiday, can I take my Binchotan with me?
Of course you can! However, be sure to let it dry for 24 hours beforehand and to transport it in a clean, airtight jar. Just let it boil before use.

Can I make my tea or coffee with Binchotan filtered water?
Yes, you can! The flavours will be even better! You may even rediscover the true flavours of your hot drinks. The purified water is also free of limescale, so it won't cause limescale build-up in your household appliances (coffee maker, teapot, kettle, etc.).

Can I give filtered water to my pets?
Yes, without any problem! It is low in calcium and will therefore be beneficial for your castrated animals or those with kidney problems.

BINCHOTAN CHARCOAL

Original Japanese product:

Our Binchotan charcoal comes directly from Japan, from the prefecture of Wakayama, the birthplace of Binchotan.

It is made using the ancient method, in a traditional handmade kiln, with branches of Japanese Ubamegashi (holm oak) whose high density is essential for the quality of traditional Binchotan.

Controlled product:

Our Japanese craftsman is renowned for his expertise. He also has the authorizations to export his binchotan. These authorizations are provided by the Wakayama prefecture and are materialized by the yellow sticker which seals each shipment. This ensures the origin and reliability of the binchotan.

Once the Binchotan has arrived in France, at our request, it is tested by the CRIIRAD, a French association approved under the law of 1901 for the protection of the environment, which conducts studies and analyses in the field of radioactivity. These tests are renewed regularly.

Active support for the craft industry:

We have taken the decision to support handicraft production all the way to Japan.

Our activity supports a family that perpetuates the ancestral know-how that is the manufacture of the real Japanese Binchotan.

This is why Binchotan sticks are not regular but we assume this originality.

Product range:

We offer binchotan in sizes S, M and L (like the clothes) or in bulk by 100g (more economical but not "calibrated").

The "calibrated" sticks are all less than 3.5 cm (or even 3 cm) in diameter and are divided according to their weight (20% tolerance):

 - Flask 0.5 - 1 L: 20 g

 - Carafe 1 L: 25 g

 - Jug 1 - 2 L: 35 g

 - Fountain 2 - 3 L: 50 g

 - Carafe 3 - 5 L: 90 g

Use :

The dosage should be adapted to the quality of your water and your palate.

The Carafe stick is sufficient for a 1 litre carafe. Depending on the quality of your water, it may be necessary to switch to a Pitcher stick or even to add 2 Gourd sticks.

This stick can only be used on water that is already drinkable.

It should be handled with clean hands.

1) Put the stick under water and scrub it with a brush or loofah.

2) Plunge it into boiling water for about ten minutes

3) Take it out and let it dry in the open air

4) Once it is dry, place it in your carafe/bottle/flask (ideally in glass or stainless steel) and fill it with DRINKING water

5) Wait (ideally 8 hours or overnight).

6) Your water is ready to be enjoyed.

Precautions :

- Always handle the Binchotan with clean hands.

- Do not leave the Binchotan in the same water for more than 48 hours.

- If it is not used continuously, be sure to let it dry and then store it in an airtight container. It should then be brushed, sterilised (10 minutes in boiling water) and left to dry before being used again.

- Brush, sterilise (10 minutes in boiling water) and dry the Binchotan at least once a month (our craftsman recommends weekly).

Depending on how often you use it, the Binchotan is effective for +/- 4 months with average continuous use.

After that it can be crushed and used in the soil to enrich it, dried and used as an odour absorber (air, refrigerator) for example.
