What is uncalibrated binchotan?
Chamarrel obtains its activated charcoal sticks from local producers in the south of Japan, with their ancestral know-how. They are obtained from a noble and very dense wood that can only be found in the south of the country of the rising sun.
For Western needs, the sticks are perfectly calibrated to meet the various constraints (quantity of water to be filtered, opening of containers, etc.). However, those that do not meet the requirements are not destroyed. As an ecological and zero waste online shop, we have decided to offer you these products for sale.

How can I use the Binchotan activated charcoal pack?

Binchotan charcoal is ideal for purifying the water needed by our bodies throughout the day. It is also perfect for obtaining purer and healthier water, especially for making hot drinks (coffee, tea, etc.) and will enhance their aromas.

How to use loose Binchotan charcoal?
After being burned, the Binchotan sticks are cooled in a mixture of sand and ash. These pieces are not graded and have not been cleaned, which is why they retain a whitish colour. This does not affect their ability to purify water. However, they should be cleaned carefully before use.
When you need to use your charcoal pieces, run them under cold water and scrub them with a vegetable brush or Loofah sponge to remove any white powder. Boil your charcoal sticks in water for about 15 minutes to activate them, then let them air dry. Once they are dry, you can then put one in each of the containers provided and fill them with water. Wait at least 8 hours before using the water.
As these Binchotan sticks are not calibrated, it is recommended to use 20 g per litre for good quality water, 30 g for average quality water and 40 g for poor quality water. To find out the quality of your water, contact your local council or here.
Do's and don'ts
Never exceed 50 g of activated carbon per litre of water and never leave your carbon in the same water for more than 48 hours. Finally, only use them with drinking water.
When you are not using your Japanese activated carbon continuously, let it dry and store it in a dry place.
Your questions about loose Binchotan
Is loose Binchotan charcoal the same quality as the single unit?
Yes, they are simply pieces of coal that are not graded and therefore cannot be sold in the same way as the others. However, they come from the same trees and branches as those offered individually and have undergone the same drying and burning process. These Binchotan offcuts are therefore just as effective and safe as the individual pieces of activated charcoal.
Are all charcoal sticks the same size?
No, you can have various pieces (sticks, sections or pucks). Their diameter is less than 4 cm, or even 3.5 cm for the sticks. This means that they can fit into a bottle without any problem. For larger pieces, you can use glass bottles of tomato sauce, for example, to turn them into a pitcher at lower cost.
How many pieces of activated carbon are there in a batch?
This figure is variable. We guarantee 100g of Binchotan, but we cannot guarantee the number of pieces for the simple reason that they are not calibrated.
