Learn more about Authentic Aleppo soap

Aleppo soap is one of the oldest soaps in the world, since it is over 3,000 years old. It is unalterable, its benefits remain even after several months or years which confirms its authenticity.

It is a cosmetic that was once used for everything: laundry, house cleaning, body wash, washing dishes, etc. Today, although its use remains purely cosmetic, it is still very beneficial. Moisturizing and antiseptic, it remains one of the best natural soaps when it comes to cleaning a superficial wound, as it effectively gets rid of bacteria and microbes. Many dermatologists also recommend to ease problems such as acne, dermatitis, psoriasis and even eczema.

The organic Aleppo soap is made out of 4 unique ingredients: olive oil, bay laurel oil, water and soda. No added petrochemical ingredients, vegan. No added color agents, the color of the soap is determined only by the oils it contains. Some soap makers make small changes to the original recipe to enrich their soap and obtain new benefits for the skin, for example Aleppo soap enriched with black cumin oil.

How to use Aleppo soap?

On the skin

It is suitable for all skin types, including the most sensitive. It also suits every age group, from infants to elderly.

Dry skin may feel better using a soap with a content of bay laurel oil between 5 and 10 % to start with. On the other hand, oily skin may aim to start with a soap enriched with 15 to 20 % bay laurel oil maximum.

Aleppo soap can help soothe irritated baby skin all the while contributing to cell renewal. The high content in olive oil helps moisturize, while the bay laurel oil helps heal and purify the skin.

Simply moisten the soap bar and rub it directly into the skin or if you prefer rub it onto a washcloth, a natural sponge, etc., and clean the face and body.

On the hair

Aleppo soap doubles as a natural shampoo bar. This soap is organic and therefore perfect for the whole family and every hair type. An application or two per week is be enough to rid your scalp of impurities. However, it is not recommended for oily hair.

Other uses

Aleppo soap can be used as shaving soap, in the same way as it is used on the rest of your body.

It is also possible to use it as a face mask. Wash your face as usual, but do not rinse immediately ; leave the foam on for a few minutes to obtain a mask. Be sure to avoid the eye area. Leave on as long as desired and the rinse with lukewarm water.

Aleppo soap is made with olive oil and bay laurel oil.

Before 1950, the inhabitants of Syria made their soaps with these two ingredients. The oils were first pressed because at that time the factories capable of pressing the waste and pits of the olives (pomace) did not exist.
Syria was under French mandate from 1920 to 1946. Engineers developed a process to extract more oil from olives by pressing the residue from the first pressing (called pomace) with a solvent.
Since then, the quantities of Aleppo soaps produced have increased because of the lower cost of this oil. Today, Aleppo soap is often made with solvent-extracted olive oil.
If you cannot find the mention 'first pressed olive oil' then it is safe to conclude the olive oil used was extracted using a solvent. Why ?

Here are some good questions to ask.

  • Oil quality: 100% olive oil? (possible blend with palm oil)
  • Extraction mode: Pressure or solvent?
  • Number of pressures: 1st, 2nd or 3rd pressure?
  • Actual % of oils used.

The stamp on Aleppo soaps does not give a guarantee of quality, it is simply the name of the soap maker, as with us where each soap bears a name or a brand.
The terms used, such as "Genuine Aleppo soap" "The only Aleppo soap" "The real Aleppo soap" do not always mean the best quality..
The oil extracted from pomace is dark green, which gives the usual color of Aleppo soap. The outer brown color of the soaps is due to oxidation.
Aleppo soaps with first pressing oil have a light green color, there is very little oxidation.

The two modes of extraction, pressure or solvent, are not limited to olive oil, they can apply to all vegetable oils.
